Assignment Overview

Assignment Title: Climate Change Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture in Kenya

Assignment Country: Kenya

Assignment Description

The overall objective of this consultancy is to provide an assessment of impacts of climate variability and change on Kenya’s agricultural sector and identify constraints to and options for adaptation. Thereby the consultancy is expected to raise increased awareness of this severe development challenge and contribute to capacity building of policy makers, researchers, advisory agents, smallholder farmers and other relevant rural stakeholders in Kenya. More specifically this study will: (i) conduct a national agricultural climate change risk/economic impact assessment; (ii) identify determinants of farm-level adaptation to climate variability and change in selected areas; (iii) identify agricultural land management practices and livelihood strategies for climate change adaptation in selected areas (including synergies and trade-offs with productivity maximization and greenhouse gas mitigation objectives); and (iv) identify perceptions of climate-related risks and adaptation strategies through participatory approaches. The consultant team should have the following key qualifications and experience: • At least two team member should have a PhD and the others a minimum of Masters Degree in agricultural science or natural resource management, in agricultural economics (or natural resource economics), climate science or a related field. • Proven expertise and experience in conducting quantitative analyses related to the impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector (including relevant simulation models). Demonstrated experience in conducting socio-economic household and plot level surveys in Africa is highly desirable. • Proven expertise and experience in qualitative and participatory rural assessments, in particular in building farmers’ capacity to adapt to climate change. • Experience in estimating/modeling GHG mitigation of agricultural land management practices and technologies is an additional asset.

Funding Source:

The World Bank intends to finance the assignment/services described below under a trust fund from the BUILDING THE ANALYTICAL CAPACITY TO MAINSTREAM ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE RISK IN BANK OPERATIONS IN AFRICA # A PROGRAM APPROACH.

The World Bank now invites eligible consultants to indicate their interest in providing the services. Interested consultants must provide information indicating that they are qualified to perform the services (brochures, description of similar assignments, experience in similar conditions, availability of appropriate skills among staff, etc.).
Consultants may associate to enhance their qualifications.
